While the roof areas have been conducted in many areas of the world, there is paucity of literature on determination of effective roof area for PV application in Nigeria. Lack of technical scientific information could hinder development of rooftop PV system.
The rooftop PV electricity potential has been evaluated for the city of Ibadan. The population sampling, Google Earth imagery and ArcGIS 10.4 were utilised in determining the available roof area required for PV deployment within the city. All the rooftops within the study area were assessed, first based on orientation, then shading and other uses.
The annual solar energy that could be harvested on rooftop for the city of Ibadan was estimated to be about 6.6714 TW h/year, with a maximum plant capacity of 1734.8 bvcMW p. This represents annual specific energy yield of 3845.6 kW h/kW p indicating that the city of Ibadan has a fairly good solar radiation.
