(With input from Xinhua) China reached a milestone with advancing efforts to build a solar power station in space in 2028, aiming to convert sunlight in outer space into electrical supply to drive the satellites in orbits or transmit power back to the Earth, according to China's spacecraft maker China Academy of Space Technology (CAST).
In 2015, Northrop Grumman Corporation in the U.S. sponsored a $17.5 million research over three years for the development of the Space Solar Power Initiative (SSPI). Duan proposed in late 2013 to kick off China's own initiative and then his team put forward China's tech approach of SSPS called OMEGA.
It added that across the prefecture, 173 once poverty-stricken villages generated a combined income of 67 million yuan through involvement in solar photovoltaic farm-related businesses in 2023 while 53,000 locals earned an average additional income of 675 yuan per person.
The Space Solar Power Station (SSPS), a hotspot technology, is a space-based power generation system used to collect solar energy before converting it to electricity and then to microwaves. The sunlight is brighter outside the atmosphere and shines almost all day.
Located within the Tengger Desert in northwestern China, covering an area of 43 square kilometers with a generation capacity of 1,500 MW, it combines PV generation with desert control
